"Navarasa Nayagan" Karthik whose real name is Murali is son of veteran actor Muthuraman. Director Bharathiraja saw him when he went on a courtesy vist to see Muthuraman and immediately decided to cast him in his movie "Alaigal Oivathillai" to which the young Karthik immediately agreed. He was doing his second year undergraduate course in New college then. Alaigal Oivathillai went on to become a huge hit of the year and a new star was then born in the Tamil Cinema. 

Karthik's career graph is marked with many peaks where he had some silver jubilee movies followed by flops. But he remained the favourite actor for many directors like Manirathnam, Visu, Sundar C. Some of his hit films include Alaigal Oivathillai, Mouna Raagam, Agni Natchatram, Varusham 16, Kizhakku Vaasal, Ullathai Alli Thaa and Amaran.
